Detailed Summary:

Introduction

You cannot win everyone’s heart as a content creator. Many misunderstand the “changing the world” part. Sometimes, it’s about the effort, not the applause.

Welcome back to Small Girl Big Talk, a space where real conversations meet personal growth. I’m Wendy, and today, in our cozy podcast studio, I’m joined by SPACEDOLLAH, a Malaysian content creator known for his space and science-themed videos. With nearly 400,000 YouTube subscribers, he has transformed humble beginnings into an inspiring journey. In this episode, we explore the mindsets, mistakes, and persistence it takes to become a successful content creator.

Starting From Scratch

SPACEDOLLAH revealed that his content creation journey began out of necessity. “I was broke. I hated my job. I had a boss who was a complete douche,” he admitted. After quitting, he worked as a Grab driver while experimenting with content—posting photos, humor skits, and reaction videos.

“I started with humor content like reaction videos because I idolized creators like PewDiePie and KSI. I thought, maybe I could be like them. Obviously, I failed horribly,” he shared. Despite early failures, he persevered. With just 1,300 ringgit, a phone, and a wireless microphone, he gradually found his footing.

“It took about two years before I saw any results. After a year and eight months, I made my first YouTube dollar,” SPACEDOLLAH said. During this period, he posted two videos a week and worked tirelessly on long-form content, often feeling like he was doing a job that didn’t pay.

Finding His Niche

Finding your niche, according to SPACEDOLLAH, isn’t about chasing trends or copying others. “It’s about doing something you enjoy for a long period. If you don’t enjoy it, it’s not your niche.”

He moved from humor to gaming content and eventually found his true passion in space and science education with SPACEDOLLAH. His fascination with space began after witnessing a rocket launch in America. “You feel the Earth shaking when a rocket lifts off. I knew then that all our Earthly problems are tiny in the vastness of the universe,” he recalled.

This perspective shaped his content creation approach. “Even though we are just a tiny speck in the universe, I can educate people and create positive change. That’s why I do what I do,” he explained.

Mindset and Overcoming Fear

SPACEDOLLAH’s philosophy is grounded in perspective. “You are so small in the vastness of the universe. Your problems, your fears, your doubts—they are insignificant in the grand scheme of things. So why care what others think?”

He stressed focusing on effort over perfection or approval: “It’s not about actually changing the world; it’s about doing something about it. Many people won’t even try, but they have all the time to complain.”

Balancing Passion and Business

While money isn’t his primary motivation, SPACEDOLLAH recognizes its importance. He has a dedicated team member to handle finances, allowing him to focus purely on content creation. “I monitor the money, but my focus is purely on making videos,” he said.

He also highlighted the value of diversifying across platforms: YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, and emerging platforms like Threads or Blue Sky. “Your job as a content creator isn’t just making videos. It’s understanding all social media. The platform you focus on today might not exist tomorrow.”

Long-Term Impact Over Quick Wins

SPACEDOLLAH differentiates creators who chase money from those who prioritize influence. “I’m impact-focused. I want to build relationships with my audience that last, something AI cannot replicate,” he explained.

Persistence in the face of slow growth is key. “A lot of people quit too soon. You have to focus on making quality content that people enjoy. One video can change everything overnight.”

This philosophy aligns with my own podcast journey: consistency and patience, despite slow growth, lead to meaningful connections and real impact over time.

Conclusion

SPACEDOLLAH’s journey reminds us that success is rarely instant. It stems from passion, persistence, and perspective. By focusing on effort, enjoying the process, and valuing long-term impact over short-term applause, creators can make a meaningful difference—even starting with just a small audience. His story proves that even tiny steps, taken consistently, can ripple far beyond what we imagine.
